6. PROCESS
Tuesday
A PowerPoint presentation of basic Principles of democracy as a starting point for a discussion of what happens if they are not respected. The students were encouraged to offer examples – positive or negative - from their own countries
The students were introduced to the activities that were to follow – 4 debates on topics related to the presentation:
The activities were organized – the students were divided into 4 groups – mixed countries and each group was further divided into two opposing teams – one team was assigned the role to find arguments FOR the motion and the other to find arguments AGAINST the motion. They were allotted a computer lab per group to help them look for arguments on the Internet. They were invited to choose the three debaters for each team, being encouraged to have a multinational mix. There was a chairperson and a Romanian teacher who supervised the activities.
Thursday
The four debates were run simultaneously. The students who were not in the debating teams formed the jury who had to evaluate the performance of the for and the against teams. In the end the chairperson collected the evaluation sheets and calculated the scores.
Friday
The members of the winning teams in each debate, the best debater and the youngest one were given diplomas.
